How to Solve Fanuc Soft Disconnect Alarm 445?

APR. 9, 2026

Engaged in this line of CNC for a long time, will always run into a love and hate alarm - Fanuc's 445 Soft Disconnect Alarm. To be honest, just saw this code that moment, eight out of ten people's first reaction is: “finished, the drive is estimated to be burned.” But I tell you, this alarm is really quite wrong, most of the time it is not the pot of the drive, but the signal line side of a small problem, the system itself feels wrong, in order to insure that the first to give you an alarm.

How to Solve Fanuc Soft Disconnect Alarm 445?
What is this 445 alarm yelling about?
The full name of the alarm is 445: n AXIS SOFT DISCONNECT, which translates to a soft disconnect on one of the axes. Sounds scary, right? In fact, the core meaning is that the system feels that the encoder side of the feedback signal is not quite the right way - not that the line is broken completely no signal, but the signal is still there, but with a drunken like, suddenly there is no, the data jumps around and unstable.

You can think of it as a phone call signal is not good, not completely silent, but the other side of the intermittent speech, a word clear a word confused. The system listens to this how can ah, you give the feedback is not reliable, in case you go knife go crooked how to do? Simply stop first, light a 445 to show you.

At this time and then compare the 445 and its brother alarm 446 you understand:

- 445 (soft disconnect): the line is not completely broken, but the signal is a mess.
- 446 (hard disconnect): no signal, and unplugged the same.

So the characteristics of the 445 is "half-dead” - the machine can sometimes move, moving halfway suddenly called a halt, shut down and restart and can last a while. This kind of intermittent problem is most likely to make people crazy, because it is not fixed, the more you want to reproduce it the quieter it is, and when you go away, it will lose its temper again.

There are a few things we see in the field
After repairing the equipment for so many years, seriously, the reason behind the 445 alarm is especially concentrated, basically just those few things, the law is obvious.

1. Encoder cable internal broken wire - this is definitely the number one suspect, no one!
A lot of people check the light look at the wire skin, the outside is intact, think it's okay, in fact, all the trouble in the inside. Especially the kind of installed in the drag chain every day with the machine running back and forth line, bending for three to five years, copper wire fatigue. The appearance of a beautiful line, in fact, has been broken inside the lotus root, contact sometimes good and sometimes bad. Typical symptom is that the machine is moving on the alarm, you reach out and gently shake the line, the alarm immediately changed a pattern - either disappear, or change the other number out. We have encountered more such cases than we can remember.

2. Poor contact with the plug
Sometimes the wire is really not broken, but the connector is not secure. It may be that when you first plugged it in, you didn't dislike it to the end, or the pins may have oxidized a film, or it may have been stained with dirt in an oil mist environment for a long time. This situation is particularly common in the coolant splash, shop oil mist on the machine, the connector pulled out a look, the pins on the oily, the contact resistance becomes large, the signal can be stable only strange.

3. Electromagnetic interference - the workshop's electrical environment is too "busy”
Some factories in the frequency converter, a bunch of big motors, wires and cobwebs like tangled together, encoder signal line and power line pasted tightly, the ground line is also sloppy. At this time the frequency converter is started, interference whooshing into the signal line, the encoder originally rules and regulations to pass the data, was disturbed by a stirring on the jump digital. The system looks at the data popping up, immediately recognized as anomaly.

4. Encoder itself old
This ratio is not high, but it does exist. With ten years of old equipment, encoder photoelectric components or circuit aging, the output signal itself with a little jitter. This is generally slow to appear, the beginning of the occasional report, and then more and more often.

5. Water and oil in the connector
A very real reason. Plug sealing is not good, the coolant seeps in along the seam, or oil mist condensation over the years in the inside, like a layer of paste, contact can be good to hell.

How do we usually check it step by step in the field?
To be honest, checking the 445 alarm does not have to be too complicated, the idea is smooth, 10 minutes to locate the general direction.

First, look at which axis is reporting. Do not come up to all the axes of the line all over again, the screen to see clearly is the X, Y or Z axis problem, just focus on that axis to get.

Focus on the encoder line. This is the top priority, the highest priority. First you scan around with your eyes to see if the line has been pressed or bent at a particularly awkward angle. Then don't idle your hands, gently shake along the line, especially the drag chain section, while shaking and watching the alarm status change on the screen. If the alarm disappears or reappears when you shake your hand, you can basically be sure that it is a wire problem.

Unplug all the relevant plugs and reinsert them again. This trick looks simple, but it works very well. When unplugging, take a look at the pins to see if they are black or green, or if there is any oil film on the surface. Plug back in a little harder to dislike tight, to ensure that in place. A lot of "inexplicable” alarms, just so a pull and insert, good.

The most direct way to try is to change the wires. If the conditions permit, remove the most suspicious encoder wire and replace it with another axis that does not report errors. Alarm follows the line, that is, the line is bad; alarm is still in the original axis does not move, then you have to check down.

Finally, the encoder body is suspected. Wire and connector are ruled out, the test also tried, and then ponder the encoder itself. If possible to adjust the encoder, or directly with a meter to measure the signal.

The drive is basically the last thing to consider. This one is especially critical - the 445 is rarely a drive problem. Don't spend money on replacing the driver right off the bat, it's expensive and doesn't necessarily solve the problem, so it's a waste of effort.

How do you make this problem less likely to bother you in the future?
These are all the experience we have gained from stepping on the pit at the customer's site, which are all tears:

- Drag chain in the line as much as possible with high flexibility and bending of the kind of special cable.
- Don't make a 90-degree dead bend when walking the line, and try to have a bigger arc.
- Encoder signal line and motor power line separate open, do not bundle together.
- Plug that piece of regular clean oil, keep dry.
- The ground wire is connected solidly, do not fool around.

In fact, in fact, many alarms are "poor environment plus equipment aging” slowly grinding out, usually pay more attention can save a lot of things.

When is it time to get help?
If you have changed the wires, checked the plugs, and even adjusted the encoder to make sure that there is no problem with the body, but the 445 still comes up from time to time, then it may not be a problem that can be solved superficially. Then it may not be the surface can be fixed things - such as encoder internal circuitry has a dark disease, the driver interface circuit is abnormal, or deeper electrical matching problems.

At this point, don't just carry on by yourself, find a professional maintenance team like SongWei CNC to come over and test it, otherwise the longer the delay, the higher the cost of downtime, but not worth it.

And finally, a word from the heart

Fanuc 445 alarm looks like a quite bluff "system failure”, in fact, the root of most of the time is the encoder line signal instability. Think about this thing to understand, troubleshooting when the heart has a plan, not to come up to the drive that dead end drilling. Repairing the machine, the right way of thinking, the work will be smooth.
