If you work on Fanuc CNC repairs, you're probably no stranger to 5139 FSSB: ERROR. It's not the kind of fault you see every single day, but whenever it does show up, it's good for a headache. A lot of guys, the first time they see that line on the screen, their gut reaction is that the servo amplifier or servo motor is done for, and they grab a screwdriver and go straight for it. But in reality, what's behind this alarm is often both more complicated and simpler than swapping an amplifier — most of the time it's not a big component that's actually dead.

This article aims to combine Fanuc's official statements about 5139 with the various situations we've actually run into while repairing machines, to talk about what 5139 FSSB ERROR really means, why it shows up, where you should check first, and only when it's actually time to suspect the servo amplifier itself.

What's the screen actually muttering at you when 5139 shows up
"5139 FSSB: ERROR" on a Fanuc screen translates to: the servo system's initialization didn't finish. Put another way, when the CNC powered up, it wasn't able to smoothly recognize the servo system and get it linked in.

Under normal conditions, a Fanuc servo doesn't just take off spinning the second power's applied. The controller first has to confirm all the servo devices are present and can actually talk to it, and only then does it move into normal servo control mode. If FSSB communication or the hardware wiring runs into trouble somewhere in that process, initialization falls through, and that's how 5139 shows up. So notice — when this alarm fires, the motor usually hasn't moved at all. It's really the system doing roll call and finding someone missing.
 
What kind of line is FSSB, and how does it manage to block servo initialization
FSSB, full name FANUC Serial Servo Bus, is basically the serial communication bus between a Fanuc CNC and the digital servo system. Think of it as a phone line running between the CNC and the servo system. The controller uses this line to pass data back and forth with each servo amplifier and motor. FSSB fiber isn't as prone to a broken core as ordinary wire, but it's still delicate — it doesn't like being kinked, crushed, or yanked hard. What you commonly see in the shop: the outer jacket worn through at a cable track or a corner of the cabinet, someone accidentally folding the fiber into a sharp kink, a connector not pushed all the way in, a loose connector, a connector that got knocked, an elbow brushing the fiber during repair work, or the fiber ending up plugged into a slightly different spot than before during reassembly.

Worth flagging specifically: if the machine was fine before, just had maintenance or repair work done, and throws 5139 the very first time it's powered back up, odds are good you need to go back and check the fiber cable. But don't assume the fiber's dead the moment you see 5139 either — Fanuc only lists it as one of the suspects. The right approach is to look first, confirm, and only swap in a different fiber to test if you really have to — not run out for a new one the instant the alarm fires.

* Wrong wiring between the amplifier and other modules
Another important cause Fanuc mentions: an incorrect connection between the servo amplifier and other modules. This comes up all the time in actual repair work. Say a machine's been running fine, someone pulls the servo amplifier and swaps it for another, reconnects the wiring, and the moment it's powered up, 5139 hits. In that case, don't jump straight to "the new amplifier's bad" — the first thing worth doing is checking over whatever wires and connectors were just touched.

Sometimes the problem is so simple it's almost annoying — a connector that missed being fully seated by half a millimeter.
 
5139 right after a repair — the timing itself is a big clue
If you run into this exact situation — machine was fine, you finish a repair, power it back on, and 5139 shows up — the timing of that alarm is worth a lot on its own.

For example: machine normal → amplifier replaced → power on → 5139. Your attention should go straight to whatever was just worked on, not off chasing suspects all over the machine. Or: machine normal → FSSB fiber replaced → power on → 5139. Then start with the fiber and the connector, don't take the long way around.

This isn't to say a freshly repaired part is automatically guilty — it's that during repair work, a connector not fully seated, a fiber plugged in wrong, a wire that shifted position, these things happen way too easily. So with 5139, when the alarm showed up and what was just worked on matter just as much as the alarm code itself.
 
Can you touch the FSSB parameters? I'd say keep your hands still
A lot of guys, the moment they see an FSSB-related alarm, their reflex is to go find some parameter and adjust it. For 5139, you really need to hold back. Different Fanuc systems — different series, different models, different amplifiers, different software versions, different machine configurations — have different FSSB setups too. There's simply no cure-all parameter you can dial in.

If the fiber, the connectors, and the amplifier wiring have all been checked and nothing's wrong, and the alarm's still stubbornly sitting there, you can go further and check the FSSB-related configuration based on the specific system model and software version. But do it against Fanuc's service manual and the machine's original parameters — don't randomly change parameters just to clear the alarm. Especially with an old machine that's run fine for years — if the FSSB configuration was never a problem before and 5139 suddenly shows up, randomly changing parameters will just muddy the water further.
 
When's it actually time to pull the amplifier out and test it?
Once you've confirmed the FSSB fiber is good, the connectors and module connections are all properly seated, and nothing looks obviously wrong with the machine's configuration — but 5139 keeps stubbornly coming back — that's when it's time for hardware testing. You can check the amplifier's operating status, its FSSB interface, the corresponding interface on the CNC side, the actual state of FSSB optical communication, and other servo system hardware.

If the customer's amplifier is an older model, or wasn't cheap when it was bought, testing the original amplifier before buying a new one is a pretty practical move. It saves you from that awkward scene: money's spent, a new part's installed, the alarm's still there, and it turns out the old amplifier was never actually broken.
 
5139 isn't the same thing as other FSSB alarms
There are several alarms in a Fanuc CNC related to FSSB or servo communication, so you can't treat every one of them with the 5139 playbook just because you see the word "FSSB." The core issue with 5139 FSSB: ERROR is "servo initialization didn't complete." Other FSSB or servo communication alarms may point to completely different fault locations. So when you're getting help, don't just say "Fanuc threw an FSSB alarm" — write down the full alarm number, the system model, the amplifier model, and when the fault occurred. That information directly shapes how the diagnosis goes from there.
 
Day-to-day upkeep to keep 5139 from paying so many visits
During routine maintenance, pay more attention to the FSSB fiber cable and its connections. When working inside the cabinet, don't casually yank on the fiber, and don't let it get pinched by a door or crushed into a sharp kink by a wire duct. After replacing an amplifier or a fiber cable, always double-check the connection points before powering back up. For older Fanuc systems that have been running for years, take a look at the fiber's condition, how snug the connectors are, and how the amplifier's operating while you're doing regular maintenance anyway. If your equipment often develops loose wiring from vibration, repair work, or cabinet modifications, adding the FSSB connections to your routine inspection checklist will definitely save you some grief down the road.
 
Don't let your guard down on safety while working on 5139
Fanuc CNC cabinets and servo amplifiers carry hazardous voltage, and some components still hold a charge even after power's cut. So beyond checking the fiber, don't treat inspection of the other electrical parts as casually as plugging and unplugging things on your computer. Before doing anything, follow the power-down, isolation, and discharge procedures required by the machine and Fanuc's service manual. In particular, never plug or unplug an amplifier, module, or connector while the equipment's energized and running. If you really do need to open the cabinet and take a look, it's best to have a qualified CNC service technician do it — don't try to be a hero on your own.
