As mentioned above, the main issue behind SV0385 is that the CNC cannot receive serial data from the separate detector. But "no data received" does not automatically mean that the detector is bad. In actual machine repair, the most common problems are usually with the detector cable, connectors, or installation environment.
Some faults are also pretty sneaky. The machine may be fine while it is sitting still, but the alarm comes up as soon as the axis starts moving.
- The feedback cable and connectors should be checked first
The separate detector communicates with the CNC system through its feedback cable. If the wire is broken, the contact is poor, or the connector is not fully seated, the data naturally cannot get through.
Pay close attention to these points: Is the outer jacket of the feedback cable damaged? Has the cable been crushed? Is there a sharp bend in it? Is the connector loose? Is it fully inserted? Do the connector contacts look abnormal? Were any related cables moved during previous repair work? Has the cable been soaked in oil or coolant?
This is especially important on older machines. A cable may have been in use for many years. It may look fine on the outside, but the inner cores or communication wires may no longer be in good condition.
- Interference you cannot see or touch can also mess up communication
If the cable, connectors, and detector all look normal, but SV0385 keeps appearing from time to time, then you need to think about signal interference.
The separate detector sends position feedback data, so communication stability is very important. If the shielding, grounding, or routing of the feedback cable is not correct, or if the cable runs too close to high-power motor cables or spindle cables, communication errors may occur.
You can check the following: Has the feedback cable been running alongside power cables for a long distance? Is the shielding complete? Does the grounding match the machine's original design? Does the alarm only appear during certain movements or under certain operating conditions?
If the machine does not alarm while it is stopped, but shows SV0385 as soon as it moves, that is something you should pay close attention to. Of course, an intermittent SV0385 alarm cannot always be blamed on interference. It is only one direction to check.
- The separate detector itself may really be faulty
Once you have confirmed that the cable and connectors are good, you need to turn your attention to the separate detector itself.
For example, the linear encoder may have failed, or the external encoder may no longer be able to output position data correctly. In that case, the CNC will naturally be unable to receive the correct serial data.
Depending on the exact type of detector, you can check whether its power supply is normal, what condition the detector is in, whether it has an output, whether the connections are secure, whether the mechanical installation is correct, and whether the manufacturer provides any useful diagnostic information.
If the machine uses a linear encoder, remember to inspect the encoder body, reading head, and related connectors. Do not spend all your time looking around inside the CNC cabinet.
- Related interface hardware cannot be completely ruled out
If the separate encoder is confirmed to be good, the cable is good, the connectors are good, and the installation and cable routing are all correct, but the CNC still stubbornly displays SV0385, then you need to check the interface hardware related to the separate detector.
This may involve the encoder interface, servo interface circuit, or other related control hardware. At this point, do not casually replace a part just to see what happens. Some boards and interface components for older Fanuc systems are expensive. Blindly replacing parts can make the repair bill climb very quickly.
