What Is 417 Actually Complaining About?
The code 417 indicates that the digital servo system has detected an incorrect servo parameter configuration. According to the Fanuc repair materials, the motor format number in parameter 2020 is invalid; the motor rotation direction specified in parameter 2022 is one that the system does not accept; the feedback pulse setting in parameter 2023 or 2024 is incorrect; the servo axis number in parameter 1023 is invalid or not continuous; the flexible feed gear ratio in parameters 2084 and 2085 needs to be checked; and it is also possible that the servo parameters have not been initialized in accordance with the Fanuc procedure. These checks are included in the Fanuc Series 21i/210i Model A manual, but different generations of Fanuc systems may have different specific parameters and diagnostic steps, so do not apply the solution for one model to all machines.
Don't Take Things Apart First, Write Down the Alarm Axis and System Model Clearly
The first thing you should do when you see 417 is not to get a screwdriver but to write down all the alarm information shown on the screen—specifically which axis has alarmed, what the CNC model is, the
servo amplifier's part number and the
servo motor's part number. You should also recall whether this alarm appeared only after you had replaced the motor, replaced the amplifier, restored the parameters, or completed some other kind of repair. This repair history is particularly useful since it can help you decide which block of parameters you should focus your check on.
Now consider the servo diagnostic information. The various Fanuc systems use different diagnostic codes. According to the manual for the Series 21i/210i Model A, diagnostic code 0280 can indicate several instances of incorrect servo parameters; in certain
16i/18i/21i systems, diagnostic code 352 provides details about invalid servo parameters when the relevant conditions are satisfied. However, the diagnostic codes are specific to the model, so you shouldn't assume that the same screen and the same bit definition can be used with all Fanuc CNCs.
Parameters Have to Be Checked One by One, Don't Copy From the Machine Next Door
With machines that are covered by the 21i/210i Model A manual, you should concentrate on verifying these particular parameters: 2020 stands for the motor format number, 2022 indicates the motor rotation direction, 2023 is the velocity feedback pulse count, 2024 is the position feedback pulse count, 1023 is the servo axis number, and 2084 and 2085 are the flexible feed gear ratio. While carrying out the check, compare the machine's original data with the relevant Fanuc parameter manual and only make changes once the exact value has been confirmed. Do not simply copy the parameters from another machine that uses the same model Fanuc system. Since the motors and the configuration differ, the parameters are very unlikely to be the same.
If the diagnostic result indicates that the servo parameters have not been correctly initialized, you should carry out the initial setting procedure as described in the specific Fanuc system maintenance manual. Before you start, you must first back up the existing parameters. Do not casually alter the parameters just in order to clear the alarm. If a parameter is set incorrectly, the machine could make unexpected movements. Fanuc also makes it very clear that you cannot directly resume automatic machining until the parameter change has been carried out and has been confirmed as correct.
After Changing Parameters, Verify According to the Rules
Once the parameters have been adjusted, restart the machine and carry out the necessary repair procedure for the CNC, making sure that error 417 has disappeared and that the servo system has reached a normal state. Before returning the machine to production, perform a controlled test as specified by the machine manufacturer, for example single block operation or a dry run without a workpiece. If all the parameters have been verified as correct but 417 still won't go away, then stop making random changes to the parameters and instead check the relevant servo hardware or the initialization procedure.
417 Only After Replacing the Motor or Amplifier, First Check the Match
If the 417 error occurs immediately after having replaced the servo motor or amplifier, first check that the replacement component is suitable for the machine's configuration. Attention should be paid to the servo parameters such as motor format, rotation direction, feedback pulse setting, and axis assignment. In the case where the parameters have been restored from a backup, it is necessary to verify that the backup was taken from the same machine and the same configuration. Do not conclude that the newly replaced part is defective on the basis of a single occurrence of the 417 error.
Our SongWei CNC Can Lend a Hand
SongWei CNC supplies Fanuc servo motors, servo amplifiers, and CNC boards, offering both new and used parts as well as testing and repair services. When you are working on a Fanuc 417, you should send us the CNC model number, the alarm axis number, the full alarm information, the servo motor and amplifier part numbers, and any diagnostic information that you have. Providing these details will allow us to determine whether the issue is actually due to parameter configuration or whether further hardware testing is required.
In the end, the Fanuc 417 is only indicating that the digital servo parameter setting is wrong. First of all, check which axis is causing the alarm, then read the relevant diagnostic information and verify the parameters such as the motor, the feedback device, the axis number, and the gear ratio against the actual configuration of this machine. Do not proceed with replacing the servo motor or amplifier until the parameter setting and initialization have been confirmed.
