How to Slove Fanuc Alarm 409?

JAN. 27, 2026

If you've been in the shop long enough with a Fanuc 0i, 16i, or 18i, you won't be able to avoid the old face of the 409 alarm. Some machines are in the big knife re-cutting suddenly jumped out, some are in the knife startup moment to give you a moment, the most abrasive is the kind of: dry work suddenly 409, reset and can run for a while, with the temper tantrums like.

Many people's first reaction is: “servo motor bad, right?” But in our maintenance desk to do a long time, see more on the scene, but will think about a layer: this 409 alarm, in the end, is the axis of the load is really overweight, or the system itself feels that it is too heavy? This is not the same thing.

How to Slove Fanuc Alarm 409?
What is the 409 alarm looking at? It's torque
Regardless of whether the alarm screen displays "409”, ‘SV0409’, or "n-axis torque alarm”, the logic behind it is very direct --The system feels that the torque output from this axis is outside of what it considers to be the "normal range”.

In Fanuc's servo system, the torque level directly corresponds to the current level. As soon as the current goes up, the system immediately knows that the axis is "straining”. But the problem is: sometimes it's a real problem; sometimes it's just a feedback or judgment error. 409 alarms are often stuck in between.

The scene of the most common several situations, in fact, not complicated
According to the cases we have dealt with, most of the 409 alarm, it is not really the servo itself is bad, more is the following "gradual change” trouble:

1. Machine "age”, the force can not keep up: this is the most common category. For example:
    * Screw or guide rail wear, to a certain position is particularly difficult, a large resistance, the current (torque) naturally went up.
    * Lubrication can not keep up, oil blocked or forget to refuel, friction resistance increases, the servo motor will have to spend more effort to drag.
    * Mechanical parts are loose or not concentric, such as a loose coupling, the motor has to put out more effort to overcome the extra vibration and drag.

2. The machining conditions have changed, but the machine is still working according to the old calendar:
    * Tool wear has dulled the cutting resistance, but the feed and speed of the machining program are still the same parameters.
    * Workpiece clamping a bit off or material changes, resulting in a knife, a section of the stroke load is particularly large.
    * Machine foundation level changed, or the spindle head a bit of subsidence, so that the moving axis in a certain position began to "scrape”.

These changes often occur slowly, the operator may not feel obvious, but the servo motor is very "honest”, the current (torque) little by little to save up, save to the system that "this is not right, too much effort”, 409 jumped out. So you will find a characteristic: 409 love in "a particular position” or "a certain kind of machining action” when the report, rather than a power on the report.

3. Electrical feedback is "lying”:
    * Encoder or feedback cable problems, such as plug into the oil, poor shielding of the signal line interference. Position feedback signal is not stable, the servo motor has to keep "fine-tuning” corrective, this corrective is like a person swaying back and forth to find the balance, extra effort, the current (torque) is abnormally high.
    * Servo amplifier itself current detection circuit "floating”, especially the old α, β series amplifier, used for a long time components aging, may be the actual current is normal, but it measured out of the large, the system mistakenly think that the torque is super.

The teacher's troubleshooting "earth recipe”: first mechanical, after the electrical
Encountered 409, do not come up to adjust the parameters, change the servo, it may be a simple problem to complicate. We usually touch in this order:

1. First let the shaft "empty run”: after the power failure, manually or low-speed movement of the alarm axis, the ear to listen to the past, there is no noise, stuttering, feel there is no obvious sense of light and heavy paragraphs. If no load are struggling, then eighty-nine is a mechanical problem.
2. Stare at the alarm timing: recall, the alarm is only in heavy cutting, high-speed movement or a specific angle? This can help you quickly lock the machining parameters or mechanical problems in a certain location.
3. The simplest swap method: If the machine has the same two axes (such as the left and right Y-axis of a gantry machine), try swapping the servo motors, or even the drives. If the alarm follows the motor, there is a problem with the motor or encoder; if it stays on the original axis, there is a problem with the mechanical part or the driver for that axis. This is the fastest way to narrow down the scope of the stupid, but often the most effective.
4. The last to look at the parameters and electrical: after confirming that the mechanical smooth, and then check the servo parameters in the load detection level, torque limit value has not been mistakenly changed. Use the diagnostic screen to check the actual load factor of the servo, and compare the current values at no load and load to see if they are reasonable.

A real pit: the parameter has taken the blame
We have encountered a lot of cases, the customer repeatedly raise the torque alarm threshold of the system, want to "cover” 409 alarm. The result of the alarm is gone, but the machine is "with the disease hard to carry”, and finally lead to serious wear and tear of the screw or servo motor overload burned, the loss is even greater. Therefore, parameter adjustment must be careful, it should be the last means of fine-tuning, rather than the preferred option.

In the end, 409 alarm is a "honest person”

It is not a complex fault code, but a very direct phenomenon prompt. It either tells you, "I can't get this axle to work, check it out!” or it reminds you, "I can't get this axle to work. It either tells you, "I feel like it's struggling, but I'm probably not getting the right ‘feel’ (faulty feedback).”

As long as you're willing to follow the line of "why is the torque high?” and patiently troubleshoot step-by-step, starting with the simplest mechanical condition, the 409 usually doesn't turn into one of those unresolvable dead ends. If, after checking all the mechanicals and parameters, you're still not sure if it's the motor or the amplifier, it's often much faster and more stable to take the parts off and send them to a place with a professional test bench (like we have here at Songwei) to have them tested than to go through trial and error on the machine.
