How to Commission a Siemens Servo Motor the Right Way?

MAY. 20, 2025

The matter of commissioning a Siemens servo motor is not difficult to say, and not simple to say. It is not like a plug so casually, adjusted well, directly affecting the operation of your entire machine. Many customers just installed a good machine test car alarm, in fact, the problem is not in the equipment itself, but in the debugging this off not done.

How to Commission a Siemens Servo Motor the Right Way?
Here to talk about, Siemens servo motor how to adjust, adjusted in place, the machine can run smoothly.

What Is Motor Commissioning in the End?
The so-called "Commissioning”, actually means making the motor "clearly recognizable, able to rotate, and able to rotate accurately" in the drive. It's not just connecting the wires and powering up the motor, there are still parameter settings, encoder calibration, direction confirmation and safety function verification to be done.

If you don't adjust it correctly, the alarm will be light, or the motor will be burned and the driver will be burned, or the action will be more and more inaccurate.

Pay Attention to These Before Powering Up
The motor you just bought or the old motor replaced on site, before receiving the equipment, don't rush to power up, first look at these:

* Cabinet environment temperature and humidity is not appropriate, do not just power on the fog or hot air.
* The power supply voltage is not the right frequency, do not get it wrong.
* Power line and encoder line are not shielded and grounded in place, less this one, easy to mess.
* Emergency stop, limit these safety protection can work properly.
* Motor and drive type, encoder interface is not the right.

Songwei will check all of these before shipment.

How to Set up the Motor Step by Step?
Step 1: Connect the wires first
Connect the motor to a Siemens drive, such as SINAMICS, SIMODRIVE. Connect the power cable to U/V/W and plug the encoder cable into the corresponding connector.
⚠️ Be sure to connect according to the original wiring diagram, don't try to fast messy connection, or interference, damage are possible.

Step 2: Open the debugging software
Use Siemens debugging tools, such as STARTER, SINAMICS SIZER or TIA Portal, and record the motor parameters into it.
* Some drivers can automatically recognize the motor model and read the parameters directly.
* If there is no automatic recognition, fill in the data manually according to the motor nameplate: rated current, speed, encoder type, etc.
* Then select the control mode you want: speed control, position control or torque control.

Step 3: Tune the encoder
Most of the Siemens motors come with built-in encoders, some with Heidenhain. To make the motor turn accurately, the encoder signal must be clear and correct.
* Calibrate the zero point: make the zero of the encoder align with the mechanical zero.
* Set the signal type right (TTL, EnDat, SSI, those).
* Run the encoder test function to see if the signal is stable and correct.
This step is skipped, the back of the accuracy of the problem basically can not get rid of.

Step 4: No-load test rotation
After powering up, do not hang the load first, run a circle of no load.
* Look at the direction of motor rotation is not correct.
* Temperature, current is not a normal range.
* There is no alarm, such as F0001 overcurrent, F3001 encoder failure.
No problem and then continue, out of the alarm quickly check.

Step 5: Add load to adjust the details
No load is no problem, you can slowly hang the load to try.
* First, run a light load, and then add it gradually.
* At the same time, adjust the PID parameters of the control loop, so that the motor can keep up and not shake.
* Acceleration and deceleration time do not forget to adjust, too fierce will be rushed, too slow the machine efficiency is low.
We have a special test bench, can simulate the actual working conditions, adjusted in advance, the customer can use on hand.

Frequently Encountered "pits”
Motor tuning most afraid of making low-level mistakes, the following do not step on the mine:

* The parameters are filled in wrong, especially the encoder type.
* Grounding is not done properly, a lot of interference.
* Encoder line positive and negative connection reversed, directly reporting errors.
* The encoder is not calibrated, the motor is not allowed to run.
* Alarm still hard running, not check directly replace the motor - the result is not the motor problem.

Don't be afraid of the trouble, just check it, or else it will be even more delayed if you rework it.

Why Do I Feel More Comfortable with Songwei?
We don't just sell parts, we are better at "making it work and work well”.

We can help you do that:
* Motor + drive test together, adjusted before shipment.
* Old system failures re-tuning, to find out the root cause is not a blind guess.
* Simulation of the load test platform, the site does not work we can also adjust.
* Familiar with Siemens is also familiar with the HEIDENHAIN encoder, hybrid systems are not afraid of.
* Engineers understand the technology and know more about the scene, will not speak a bunch of terms that you do not understand!

Saving you the trouble of repeated debugging and not being able to find faults.

Lastly

Commissioning Siemens motors, in fact, is not complicated, but must be careful. Tuned well, the machine is stable, less failure; tuned confused, either burned drive is not allowed. If you have your own team can adjust, that of course the best, if not, find Songwei. We do not only ship, we are responsible for making it "can run, run right, run stable”.
